Weekly Review: January 8-14, 2012

In 4 games this last week Detroit went 3-1-0 improving to 28-15-1 on the season and pulled within one point of the divisional leaders, the Chicago Blackhawks.

Game 1 - @Chicago Blackhawks - Win: 3-2 OT
This game started much like the previous day's game against the Leafs with a few quick goals against the Red Wings. However after those first 2 goals Ty Conklin was amazing stopping 29 of 31 shots and a penalty shot. The Red Wings' comeback was started with a 5-on-3 power play goal by Valtteri Filpulla. The game had back and forth momentum but both goalies kept the puck out of the net, until the 3rd period when Dan Cleary hammered in
a hard working garbage goal rebound off of a Henrik Zetterberg shot. This sent the game in to OT where Pavel Datsyuk was able to bank a bad angled shot off of Blackhawks Defencemen Nick Leddy and in to the net for the game winner.
Though The Wings picked up the 2 points for the win, they gave a point to the Blackhawks and now sit in a 3 way tie along with the Blue's of the Central Division with 53 points.

Game 2 - @New York Islanders - Loss 5-1
Not much to write about from a Detroit fan's perspective as this one was all Islanders. It looked as if the Red Wings were trying to give a confidence boost to goaltender Ty Conklin by starting him against the paltry Islanders. Though it may have backfired as he let in 3 of 4 shots in the 2nd period. The game was pretty much the John Tavares Show. After getting hit in the face with the puck in the first he rebounded to get 1 goal and 2 assists. The Wings however, poured it on in the the 3rd getting a quick goal from Jakub Kindl but that would be the only goal they scored as Evgeni Nabokov had a stellar performance and was responsible not letting the game slip out of the Islanders grasp.

Game 3 - Phoenix Coyotes (@Home) - Win 3-2 OT/SO
Jimmy Howard was stellar in this game getting his 100th career win and the Red Wings extended their home
win streak to 13 games. The Coyotes opened the scoring with Radim Vrbata with a deadly snipe over Howard's shoulder, but not to be out done Valtteri Filpulla answered right back with a cross-bar-ringing shot of his own. Johan Franzen tied up the
game with a beautiful tip-in late in the 3rd period sending this game to OT and later a Shoot-out Datsyuk was the first to score with a nice backhand shot over Mike Smith's glove hand, but Radim Vrbata answered back scoring on his attempt. Henrik Zetterberg was called in to action as the 4th shooter and scored using the "Peter Forsberg" one-handed deke.
The Coyotes fought hard in this one but due to the Red Wings superior skill and excellent backstopping by Jimmy Howard they were able to squeak out a win.

Game 4 - Chicago Blackhawks (@Home) - Win 3-2 OT
This game was a crazy game full of bounces and was easily the most exciting game of the week. Jimmy Howard played a stellar game getting his 101st career victory stopping 25 of 27 shots, 16 of which came in the 3rd period. The scoring was started in the 1st period by a text-book Tomas Holmstrom tip-in from an Ian White point shot. Following that Todd Bertuzzi backhanded the puck in the net from a set up pass from Pavel Datsyuk. The Blackhawks managed to even the score however, scoring in the 2nd period and by pulling Cam Crawford with about a minute and a half left in the game setting up a point shot by Marian Hossa which lead to a rebound goal put away by Jonathan Toews sending the game to overtime.
In overtime with time winding down Valtteri Filpulla took the puck in the corner and skated around the net, passing to Todd Bertuzzi who immediately passed it back to Filpulla who wristed it on net. Crawford let up a high rebound which was batted in to the net by Todd Bertuzzi (his 2nd goal of the night) with 38.3 seconds left in the game.
This was a big win for the Red Wings however since they let the Blackhawks get a point from the Overtime Loss the Hawks remain a top the Central Division.
***
All in all this was a good week for the Red Wings, but if they want to climb to the top of the Division and Conference they have to start winning more games in regulation as they handed out 2 points to Division Rivals the Chicago Blackhawks despite beating them in both contests.
